‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ to return to the big screen; David Mamet will write, direct

Pulitzer-prize winning playwright David Mamet is collaborating with Disney to write and direct a new screen adaptation of “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

According to Variety.com, Mamet will work side by side with producer Andrew Braunsberg, who also produced the film “Being There.”

The true story, written by a young Jewish girl hiding from the Nazis with her family, is a somber turn for the Disney empire. Titled “The Diary of a Young Girl,” the book recounts her family’s two years living in secret in the annex of her father’s office building in Amsterdam during the Holocaust, from 1942 to 1944.
